Immunotherapy
(Allergy Treatment)

Long-Term Relief for Allergies

At The Allergy & Asthma Center, we offer several forms of allergen immunotherapy, a treatment designed to address the root cause of allergies rather than simply treating symptoms.

Immunotherapy works by gradually exposing the immune system to small amounts of allergens so the body becomes less sensitive to them over time. This can significantly reduce allergy symptoms and may even provide long‑lasting relief.

Traditional Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots)

What It Treats

Allergy shots are highly effective for managing environmental allergies, including pollen (trees, grass, and weeds), dust mites, mold, and pet dander. They are also the standard treatment for stinging insect allergies.

How Allergy Shots Work
  • Phase 1: Build-up – Weekly injections with gradually increasing amounts of allergens to desensitize your immune system.
  • Phase 2: Maintenance – Once the effective dose is reached, injections become less frequent, typically once or twice a month.
Benefits of Immunotherapy

The primary benefit of allergy shots is the potential for significant, long-term reduction in allergy symptoms. Many patients experience a decreased reliance on daily medications and may even achieve complete remission.

Who Should Consider Immunotherapy?
  • Individuals with moderate to severe allergy symptoms.
  • Those whose symptoms are not well-controlled by standard medications.
  • Patients who experience significant side effects from allergy drugs.
  • People who prefer to address the root cause of their allergies.

Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT)

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), also known as allergy drops, is a way to treat allergies without injections. This method is often preferred by patients who have a fear of needles or a busy schedule that makes frequent office visits difficult.

How SLIT Works

Instead of an injection, the allergen is delivered via drops placed under the tongue, where it is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. This gradual exposure allows your immune system to develop a natural tolerance over time, reducing the severity of your allergy triggers.

Benefits of SLIT
  • Non-invasive treatment (no needles required)
  • Convenient at-home administration after initial office visit
  • Effective for environmental allergens like pollen and dust and food allergies
  • Reduces the long-term need for symptomatic medications
Safety and Side Effects

SLIT is generally considered safe with a low risk of severe systemic reactions. Most side effects are limited to mild, local symptoms such as mouth itching or minor stomach upset. These typically resolve quickly as your body adjusts to the treatment.

Food Allergy Immunotherapy

Traditional allergy shots cannot treat food allergies, but at The Allergy & Asthma Center, we offer specialized therapies designed specifically for food allergies. These treatments work by gradually increasing the body’s tolerance to food allergens, helping reduce the risk of severe reactions.
